SIXTH BOCCONI TRANSATLANTIC IP SUMMER ACADEMY

1 - General objectives

Università Bocconi is organizing in July 2012 the Sixth edition of the Transatlantic Intellectual Property Summer Academy, jointly with the University of Trento, and with the support of the European Patent Office and the European Union Office for the Harmonisation of the Internal Market (OHIM). Considering the growing role and importance of Intellectual Property in European and North-American knowledge-based economies, this one week course will focus on two IP subjects: IP Rights and Technology and IP and Territory, with an inter-disciplinary approach, including IP law, IP economics, IP business and IP operational practicalities at an international level.

Thanks to lectures held by leading IP scholars and researchers from 10 countries in Europe and North America, participants will have a broad perspective on both, IP Rights and Scientific Research and IP and Territorial Economic Development, especially at an international and comparative level.

The horizontal and dynamic teaching system will give participants the opportunity to embrace all aspects of IP Rights management in real life by involving case and example studies, practical exercises as well as direct contact with IP operators. The Summer School is dedicated to the relationship between innovation and role of intellectual property in the construction and operation of inter-firm networks.
 

2 - Date and venue 

The lectures will be held at the Faculty of Law and Department of Legal Sciences of Trento from July 2 to 6, 2012, six hours per day (three in the morning, three in the afternoon).

4 - Teaching language 

English only (administrative assistance offered in French, German, Spanish and Italian).
 

5 - Access requisites   

 - Graduate Degree in Law, Economics or Engineering OR
 - Undergraduate Degree in Law (subject to a selection procedure) OR
   The course is also open to young researchers and professionals working in TTOs.
 

6 - Course contents

 - 30 hours teaching program;
 - Visits to IP operators;
 - Printed and online teaching material to each course participant.


7 - How to apply

The School is addressed to PhD students and postdocs in the fields of economics, law, engineering, and also in other fields, provided that they show interest and research experience in the areas of the course.

Admission to the School is subject to an evaluation procedure directed by the scientific coordinators of the school. 

Candidates are required to submit with the application a curriculum vitae et studiorum, mentioning selected publications if any, and a short essay of up to 4000 characters which should contain the description of the candidate's main research interests and the motivations for application.

The maximum number of eligible candidates is 20. For the purposes of admission candidates will be graded upon their cv, publications and the submitted essay. 

In any case two/fifth (2/5) of the total assigned seats will be reserved for non-Italian candidates.

Applications shall be sent by no later than the 08th of june 2012, h 24 (Italian time), using the form downloadable at http://events.unitn.it/en/networksforinnovation/call-applications . The form shall be printed, filled in, signed, scanned, and sent to networksforinnovation@unitn.it, together with the candidate's CV, short essay, and valid ID or passport copy.

Fees are established by our partners, in coordination with Università Bocconi, and collected by University of Trento. They amount to Euro 300. Participants should book and pay directly their travel, accommodation and meals. Fees do include participation to the lectures and correlated activities, as well as electronic study materials.

Reductions will be applied to meals and accommodations costs.

A reduced fee is offered to PhD students of the hosting Institutions.
 

8 - Number of participants  limited to 30
 

9 - The Summer Academy is a residential program and includes:

- Courses, seminars and visits to IP operators;
- Discounts for accommodation bookings;
- Printed and online teaching material to each course participant in Alicante.

In addition, for the period of the Summer Academy, participants will have full access to all University of Trento facilities (Library, electronic resources and all premises).

10 - E-Helpdesk

The ipsummer@unibocconi.it mailbox will provide guidance to participants or applicants. Course participants' E-Helpdesk and a tutorship phone desk will be set up from 1 May 2012 at University of Trento until one week after the end of the course and will provide advice and guidance for inquiries relating to travel opportunities, early arrival and extended stay.
 

11 - International Faculty

As per standard practice, the inter-disciplinary International Faculty is constituted by Bocconi Professors and Professors /Department Directors/ Deans from each partner and cooperating institution, including Professors Roberto Caso (University of Trento), David Lametti and Richard Gold McGill University Montreal, Mark Perry (The University of Western Ontario -Canada), Marie Cornu (Director, CNRS CECOJI), the EPO Academy, the newly created OHIM Academy, the WIPO Development Cooperation Sector, etc.
 

12 - Program Details   

Program contents include inter-disciplinary high-level teaching on IP Rights and Technology and IP and Territory, with added value in each of the following fields:

- North American, European and International IP Law
- North American, European and International IP Economics
- North American, European and International IP as a tool for Researchers
- North American, European and International IP Business operational models

The School lectures will be divided into two main parts. In the first part, the Summer School will focus on business networks, seen as a government models of cooperation between economic actors, focusing on understanding of phenomena and current issues, including: organizational choices related to innovation and internationalization strategies, the role of contracts and intellectual property as a means for fostering investment and collaboration among companies, government chain of innovation in the global marketplace.

In the second part, the field of intellectual property in the context of networks will be further studied in-depth: after an initial review of the specific tools of innovative knowledge management and the proprietary rights involved, the patent regulatory role, but also copyrights and trademarks will be considered in the specific context of digital technologies, biotechnology and agri-food sector.

End of the Summer School

 

As a result of their attendance to the Bocconi Transatlantic Summer IP Academy 2012, participant lawyers, economists, scientists and engineers, as well as business specialists(at student or young professional level) are to:

- enhance, thanks to lectures by the best international IP specialists, their international knowledge in their own field of expertise
- better embrace: IP Rights and Technology and IP and territorial Economic Development globally, as a subject item at the crossroads between different stakeholders

For all lessons, a participatory and interactive teaching approach is chosen, involving business case examples and studies, practical exercises and direct contact opportunities with IP operators and companies in a dynamic, horizontal and open work environment. In addition, free tutor assistance will be available to the participants, in order to ensure cohesion between the participants.

An optional daily recreational program is available in advance to participants and includes

- invitations to cultural activities
- free of charge social activities and activities at limited costs
 

13 - Attendance certificates
