General rules for registration in student’s academic career

Foreign languages are classified as follows:

• “Curricular” languages (UE languages):
  • such languages are usually registered in the academic career as first/second language; cpu are included in the standard 180 /120 /300 cpu of the study plan (please find in the Guide to the University detailed information about how to choose curricular languages, minimum exit levels and teaching services);
  • moreover, they can be registered in the academic career as “extra activities” (4 cpu); cpu are recorded on top of standard 180/120/300 cpu of the study plan.

• “Extra” languages:
  • such languages can be registered in the academic career as “extra activities” only (4 cpu); therefore cpu are recorded on top of standard 180 /120 /300 cpu of the study plan.

English, Italian, French, Spanish and German are “curricular” languages.

Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian are “extra” languages.

Portuguese is:

• “curricular” language up to a.y. 2018-19: it can be choosen as first /second language up to a.y. 2018-19;
• “extra” language as of a.y. 2019-20: as of 2019-20 students (any cohort) cannot choose it as first/second language any more.

International certifications (curricular and extra languages) can be registered in the academic curriculum provided that they are:

• officially recognized by Bocconi University (see the list below);
• submitted to the Administrative Office of the Language Center before the “expiry date” which is within 3 years after sitting the international certification exam (2 years for the international test TOEFL and – as of Sept 1st 2019 – for the IELTS test as well);
• submitted by the owner of the international certification (who is required to show his/her personalized Bocconi ID card);
• original certifications or statement of results (with stamp and signature of the certifying agency) only are allowed for submission.

International certifications must be achieved and submitted for conversion by the study plan completion date relating to the selected Graduation session or, in any case, by the deadlines set to submit applications for the selected activities.

We remind that it is not possible to request the recognition of an international certificate if the curricular exam of the same language has been recorded in the academic career, or even if the written exam has been passed with a sufficient grade, until the end of the exam session, which ends after the oral exam and the grade recording.

When the result score of the International Certifying Agency is expressed to decimal places, the result is rounded up when the decimal place is greater than or equal to 5.

“Curricular” Languages:

international certifications whose level/typology (general, business, legal) is higher than the minimum required can be registered in place of minimum level/typology required (ie, when the minimum level/typology required is B1 general, then a B1 business or B2 business or higher level/typology is allowed; when the minimum level/typology required is B1 business, then a B2 general or B2 business or higher level/typology is allowed).

Please note that the level/typology recordered in the academic curriculum is the level/typology stated by the Certifying Agency on the international certification.

Overlap between adjacent levels is allowed solely when the Certifying Agency explicitly provides for overlapping levels (for example: C1 scores recognizable as B2 scores and viceversa).

English language of MSc programs as of cohort 2018-19:

A C1 general certification can be registered in place of a B2 business certification (B2 business and C1 business are the minimum level/typology required) only if it is qualified as “general plus”, that is:

• the the score corresponds to a mark equal to/higher than 26 out of 30 (cohort 2018-19);
• the the score corresponds to a mark equal to/higher than 27 out of 30 (cohort 2019-20 and following cohorts).
