EU for Sustainable Globalization Lab

Course summary

Over the last months, climate change and global warming became front-page news. However, sustainable development has since long been at the heart of the European Union project. The EU gives recognition to its economic, social and environmental dimensions that should be tackled together.
This is an introductory course on the EU, its objectives, institutions, its decision making and its main policies – e.g., single market, trade policy, agriculture transportation, energy - and how they are mainstreamed by the aim of sustainable development. The course is interdisciplinary since combines history, law, politics and economics.
At the end of the course, students will have a thorough understanding of the main issues behind the process of European integration, as well as the ability to take a critical stand in current European debates and challenges with a focus on sustainable development.

Learning Objectives:

The course addresses in particular the following questions and issues:

1. Why is there a rising attention on environment?
2. What is the link between globalization and sustainable development?
3. Why is the EU relevant in the global scenario?
4. What is economic integration and how does it take place in Europe?
5. How does the EU take action?
6. What are the key priorities for the future development of the European integration and sustainable development?

Assessment: Friendly qualitative feedback will be given based on the individual class participation and final presentations by small groups.

The course is an introduction to our university’s interactive and hands-on approach to teaching the BSc in International Politics and Government.
