Students mobility - Funds and Policy

The following typologies of funding are made available to support PhD students mobility.

  • FELLOWSHIP INCREASE  (only for Bocconi merit-based fellowship recipients)
  • BUDGET FOR STUDY and RESEARCH ACTIVITIES (for all PhD students)

FELLOWSHIP INCREASE: Study/ Research abroad
For study and research activities abroad  authorized by the PhD Program Director, the amount of the fellowship is increased by 50% (calculated on the amount of the ministerial fellowship, which is € 15,343.28) and for a maximum total period of 18 months.

The minimum length of the stay is one month, and only full months are taken into consideration for funding, e.g. if the stay abroad is one and a half months, the fellowship is increased for one month.
Students can apply for more periods of stay (in the same or different Institutions), provided that they don't exceed a total of 18 months

PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING THE FELLOWSHIP INCREASE

  • First step
use the form “Fellowship increase – Study / Research abroad”.
The form, that must contain a short description of motivation of stay abroad, has to be signed by the student's advisor and by the PhD program Director, then it has to be handed in to the PhD Administrative Center (PhD-AC), Piazza Sraffa 11, 2nd floor, room 208, before the student’s departure.
  • Second step
send by e-mail, in .pdf format, to the PhD-AC (gualtiero.valsecchi@unibocconi.it - barbara.contaldo@unibocconi.it), at the end of the stay abroad or at the end of each bimester, a statement signed and on letterhead issued by the hosting University / Institution, where the uninterrupted period of stay (dd / mm / yyyy to dd / mm / yyyy) and the activity carried out, have to be indicated. The increase of the fellowship is paid at the end of the month following the month in which the PhD-AC received the statement.

BUDGET FOR STUDY and RESEARCH ACTIVITIES (for all PhD students)

Bocconi PhD School supports PhD students’ study and research activities in their last two regular academic years of the program, whether they are fellowship recipients or not.

The budget aims at giving PhD students’ a better chance to:
1. present their work at conferences, in the presence of the international scientific community
2. attend additional courses (Summer/ Winter Schools)
3. spend time abroad as visiting student at other universities
4. develop research projects (through experiments and purchase of database) to work out an original and innovative thesis project

It also covers travel expenses related to the above mentioned activities.

Complete information, application details, deadlines, and forms are shared by the PhD program Directors when funds are about to be made available to the recipients.

All expenses must comply with the Bocconi Travel Policy - posted in the yoU@B agenda, “Documents” section (“Budget for PhD students Study and Research activities - Travel Policy” area) - which you are expected to carefully read.
Information on the Budget for study and research activities is posted in the same section, as well; for access insert your PhD student credentials.

Before travelling, all risks and threats should be considered and evaluated. Bocconi has partnered with
International SOS to provide medical, safety and security advice to outgoing students.
A dedicated page with detailed instructions is available on yoU@B agenda, in the left side “International SOS” box.
This is recommended for PhD students who:
- have not defended their thesis yet;
- travel abroad not as research assistants. For students who work as research assistants, Faculty&Research Unit is in charge of travel risk assessment.
