COMPUTER SCIENCE (30424)
Starting from the Academic Year 2022-2023 this course will be delivered by the Department of Computing Sciences.
The Computer science course is intended for students enrolled in CLEAM, CLEF, CLEACC, BESS, BIEM, BIEF and BIG programs, it is worth 6 credits and it is taught in the second semester of the first year of the program.
Course Objectives
The objective is to provide students with new skills they can immediately use in their studies and that are fundamental to enter the job market: to structure, process, analyze data and effectively communicate information in order to solve managerial problems and support decision-making processes.
Teaching methods
The course includes traditional in-class lectures and hands-on sessions, which will take place in specially designed IT classrooms.
Syllabus
The course is divided into two sections that highlight four areas of expertise, integrated one to the other to reach the final objective of the course:
- PROCESS AND ANALYZE DATA: deepen the application of the spreadsheet to import, structure, process and analyze data, understanding the logic and functions in the solution of business problems, in order to produce meaningful and consistent information according to defined goals.
- LEARN COMPUTER PROGRAMMING: learn the basics of computer programming, learn how to program with Python, use Python to solve business problems.
The course alternates lessons in traditional classrooms and practice sessions in computer rooms, mainly focusing on the use of Microsoft Excel at an advanced level and on programming with Python.
Exam Methods
The exam can be taken in two ways: as two partial exams or as a single general exam.
- The set of two partial exams is intended only for students who regularly attend the lessons and both partial exams refer specifically to the partial exams’ bibliography. Only first-year students can sit for partial exams. It is not possible to sit or repeat partial exams in the following years. To access the second partial it is mandatory to pass the first partial (with score >=9) and achieve ICDL prerequisite (see the following information). To pass the exam with partials, it is necessary to earn a positive grade (>=9) on both of them. The final grade comes from the sum of the two partials. It is possible to register for only one of the two sessions of second partial exams.
- The single general exam is for students who have not taken or passed partial exams. This exam refers to the general exam bibliography.
In both cases the exam consists of multiple-choice questions and computer exercises.
The software used are:
- Excel 2019 for Windows in English, with regional options and formats set to English (US)
- Python 3.10.x with IDLE
N.B. The exam takes place on several shifts during the same day (the classroom and exact time are communicated the day before the exam). The shift that has been assigned cannot be changed. In case of serious and verifiable reasons, it is necessary to report to the ITEC office before the registration closing date.

Prerequisite for the exam
It is possible to register for the Computer science exam (second partial or general) only after obtaining, by the set deadlines, a basic ICT certification among those accepted.
If the prerequisite has not been achieved by the established deadlines, the registration for the exam will not be allowed.
