Interpersonal Relations: From “Healthy" Relationships to Emotional Dependencies
Have you ever felt distressed or trapped in a relationship?
Have you ever felt that you were in a "toxic" relationship?
Have you felt limited in relationships?
Have you ever had difficulty ending a friendship or romantic relationship?
In our meeting we will address some aspects of recognizing a healthy relationship from a dysfunctional one.
The need to bond with significant others (friends, classmates, partners, etc.) is a central element of the human experience and has been widely described in psychology, philosophy and literature.
However, the relationships we establish with others are not always beneficial to our wellbeing.
We often find ourselves in relationships that do not serve us and end up being harmful, even evolving into an emotional dependency. This happens when one is sought out for protection, guidance and support even in situations where the other person can autonomously function; dependency becomes rigid and pervasive, with the implication that it is absolutely necessary.
In these cases, an emotional dependency can develop.
In this talk we will try to learn more about how to recognize the elements of a healthy relationship as well as the warning signs to understand if we are experiencing a dysfunctional relationship that can lead to emotional dependency. In the final discussion we will share a reflection on the importance of consensus in relationships
