Let's Talk: Sleep

HOW IMPORTANT IS SLEEP FOR OUR HEALTH?

Sleep is a physiological state of consciousness where we have limited interactions with our surroundings and we are relatively quiet and still (depending on the stage of sleep). Contrary to our quiet physical state, the brain is very active during sleep, carrying out many important functions.

Sleep is important for every part of the body, and it is particularly true for children and young adults as their bodies and minds develop. In young people lack of sleep or poor quality sleep can be associated with difficult behaviors, lower capacity to learn and retain information, and a propensity for poor eating patterns and weight gain.

Additionally sleep and mental health go hand-in-hand. Good sleep is essential for maintaining our baseline mental health and chronic exposure to poor sleep quality is associated with an higher risk for depression, anxiety, and other conditions.

Some questions that can help us understand how we cope with sleep:

Do you wake up rested in the morning? Do you experience drowsiness throughout the day? Do you experience snoring or have you ever been told that you interrupt your breathing during sleep? During sleep, do you ever experience talking/urring, moving a lot or getting out of bed and walking around without remembering ( or partially remembering) in the morning what happened? Do you happen to suffer from Insomnia?

Specialist medical consultation, will address the many issues related to sleep function.

Meetings will be one-on-one with a duration of about 30 minutes in the Campus Life Space, via Bocconi 12 and will be held by Prof. Carolina Lombardi, Head of the Sleep Medicine Service at the Istituto Auxologico Italiano.

Let's Talk: Sexuality and your Well-being

Sexuality is a central aspect of life. It is connected to our overall health, involving both our mental and physical well-being. Contact with each other's bodies requires also getting in touch with oneself, one's fears, fantasies, and expectations. How do you experience sexuality? How important is it in your life? Do you have questions about this area of your life as it relates to your relationship with yourself and others? You can hear from an expert in the field and ask questions you may be wondering about.

Substance and Behavioral Addictions: How to recognize and manage them

Our sensitivities and the vulnerabilities or frailties that characterize us are often adaptive to our living environment. However, if they are not understood and managed they can become the basis for dysfunctional – i.e. inadequate attitudes and generate addictions, such as addictions to substances (smoking, alcohol, drugs) or behaviors (gambling, electronic devices, sex, work, sports, TV series...).

During the event, the basics and models of behavioral vulnerability, understood as the ability to recognize a resource in one's limitations, without considering them a pathology, will be explained. We will then discuss the signs and indicators that we can use as alarm bells to understand if we are enacting addictive behaviors.

Gabriele Zanardi: psychologist, psychotherapist and neuropsychologist. Adjunct Professor at the University of Pavia Department of Experimental and Forensic Medicine and President of the Italian Toxic Addiction Society Lombardy. Since 1998, he has been working on neuroscience applied to the understanding and clinical analysis of human behavior, particularly in the addiction and behavioral addiction fields. After collaborating with the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, in addition to various popular and scientific activities, for the last 5 years he has been involved in the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Interpersonal Relations: FromHealthy" Relationships to Emotional Dependencies

Have you ever felt distressed or trapped in a relationship?
Have you ever felt that you were in a "toxic" relationship?
Have you felt limited in relationships?
Have you ever had difficulty ending a friendship or romantic relationship?

In our meeting we will address some aspects of recognizing a healthy relationship from a dysfunctional one.

The need to bond with significant others (friends, classmates, partners, etc.) is a central element of the human experience and has been widely described in psychology, philosophy and literature.

However, the relationships we establish with others are not always beneficial to our wellbeing.

We often find ourselves in relationships that do not serve us and end up being harmful, even evolving into an emotional dependency. This happens when one is sought out for protection, guidance and support even in situations where the other person can autonomously function; dependency becomes rigid and pervasive, with the implication that it is absolutely necessary.

In these cases, an emotional dependency can develop.

In this talk we will try to learn more about how to recognize the elements of a healthy relationship as well as the warning signs to understand if we are experiencing a dysfunctional relationship that can lead to emotional dependency. In the final discussion we will share a reflection on the importance of consensus in relationships
