European Law Moot Court Competition

The European Law Moot Court is organized by the ELMC Society, which was founded in 1988. It is an annual international competition held between University teams of students who have an interest in European Union Law and it consists in the simulation of a judicial proceeding before the Court of Justice of the European Union. Teams from universities all over the world take part in the competition. They are generally composed of 3-4 law students.

The European Law Moot Court is considered as the most prestigious moot court within the field of European Union Law and one of the most important moot court competitions in the world. Moreover, it is a fascinating educational experience, very much appreciated by law firms. Indeed, it enables students to network with their peers and with world-class law firms sponsoring the competition.

The ELMC is divided in a written and an oral phase. Each September the ELMC Committee publishes the case that will be pleaded during the competition. The teams are expected to draft two written pleadings, setting out the arguments of the Applicant and of the Respondent. The deadline for the submission of the written pleadings is usually in November. The teams selected at the end of the written phase will be invited to participate to the regional finals. The four regional finals are held in European and US Universities over the four weekends of February. Students from dozens of nationalities face constant questions of the Judges. The European Union Court of Justice hosts the final of the European Law Moot Court at the end of March/beginning of April.
