The Centre was established in 1978 as part of Bocconi University. The aim of the Centre is to conduct research on social and political institutions and processes, in Italy and in comparative perspective. While primarily drawing from the disciplines of political science and sociology, the Centres researchers are engaged in a constant dialogue with economists and lawyers.
In twenty years of activity, the Centre has conducted numerous research projects on a wide range of topics, including mass beliefs and public policies, politics of taxation, industrial policies and politics, democratization in Eastern Europe, institutional architecture of the EU, migration and citizenship, comparative welfare state reforms. Many of these research projects have been carried out in close cooperation with major European and US research centres and academic institutions. The Centre has published a series of working papers. The Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica, Italys leading political science review, published by Il Mulino, was co-edited by Professor Maurizio Ferrera, vice-director of the Centre, from 1998 to 2000. Actually the Centre is involved in research projects on the following themes: Italian public policies in a comparative perspective; fighting poverty and social exclusion in Southern Europe; cost of no-social policy; future of Social Europe; European integration and national social sovereignty; Europeanization of public policies. Poleis has participated to the last three EU framework programs: FP4 (research project on labour market re-integration), FP5 (research project on anti-poverty policies in Southern Europe) and FP6 (IPN on new governance).
