Capital in the Twenty-First Century, now released in Italy by Bompiani, has attracted the interest of readers all over the world, and Piketty was hailed as the Karl Marx of the 21st century by The Economist. On the basis of time serieses covering 250 years of world history, Piketty charts the long-term evolution of the capital-labor ratio and the personal distribution of income and wealth. His fundamental assertion is that as long the return on capital stays above the growth rate, inequality is bound to rise and wealth to become more concentrated in the hands of the richest 1%. The three decades of prosperity and reduction in inequality experienced by the West in the aftermath of World War II would then be an exception in the history of capitalism, not likely to be repeated in the century we are living in.

Thomas Piketty (1971) is presently Directeur d'études at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales (EHESS) and Professor of Economics at the Paris School of Economics. He studied at Ecole Normale Supérieure and London School of Economics, and was Assistant Professor at MIT.

The book presentation will be held in English. For Italian speakers, a simultaneous intepretation service will be available.
