The PhD in International Law and Economics began in 1990 and has been part of the Bocconi PhD School since 2006. This unique PhD program is particularly interdisciplinary in nature and has connections with universities abroad, specialized research centers and international organizations. The program is coordinated with the other PhD's offered by Bocconi, in particular with the PhD in Law of Business and Commerce.
The program aims to provide the tools for the analysis of political and economic presumptions and the typical legal patterns in which national economies evolve. The subjects offered are therefore Public International Law and International Business Law (international contracts), Trade Law, European Union Law, Public Law and Economics, International Taxation Law, International Economics and European Integration as well as the principles and functioning of the main economic organizations (European Commision, OMC/WTO, IMF, World Bank, OECD, regional organizations), legal regulations of the economy (anti-trust, environmental, investments) development economics.
Course Structure
The PhD in International Law and Economics lasts 3 years and is organized in courses and specialized seminars, in working groups and seminar series in Italy and abroad.
In particular, during the first year, students are obliged to take courses and seminars for a total of 350 hours. During the second year doctoral students are invited to travel abroad and carry out research in universities and research centers. Participation to relevant conferences, courses and seminars at other qualified institutions is encouraged.The third year is dedicated to their thesis.
Prof. Giorgio Sacerdoti has been the coordinator of the program since 2008 and is a full professor of International Law at Bocconi University.
The Faculty of the PhD is made up of professors who teach the subjects of the program, together with visiting professors from abroad. Every PhD student is guided by a Tutor chosen from the Faculty Board.
Future Careers
Over 70 doctorate students found a placementin international organizations, research centers, public administrations, multinational organizations, consultancy and professional law firms, as well as in universities in Italy and abroad.
