DEPARTMENT OF DECISION SCIENCES

Address: Via Roentgen 1, Milano - 3rd floor

Department Head: Piero Veronese

The Department of Decision Sciences was founded with the aim of promoting, coordinating and spreading the research, study and teaching of quantitative disciplines which are the essential foundation for individual and collective decisions. In this framework, the Department intends to achieve its objectives of quality in teaching and basic and applied research, exchanging ideas with and interacting with the best international academic institutions, in addition to Bocconi's other Departments and Research Centers. International Visiting Professors regularly collaborate in Faculty teaching and research.

The Department's activities include the following themes, which are interconnected:

  • Decision Theory, which includes decision models and their empirical and experimental examination (economics, psychology, neuroscience). Research trends currently examine: behavioral decision theory, consumer choice theory, mathematical psychology and economics, risk evaluation and, in collaboration with the Department of Economics, game theory.
  • Management Science, Operations Research and Computer Science, which studies quantitative methods applied to management, ranging from theoretical models to computational models and company data analysis. Specific disciplines in the area are: business statistics and data mining; information technology and calculator programming; quantitative methods for marketing; computational and simulation models; and operational research.
  • Methods for Social Research and Policy Analysis, which includes analysis methods of economic-social data; demographics and population models; social statistics, the study of sample studies, psychometrics and social research methodology; and quantitative analysis of the impact of regulation and policy (program evaluation).
  • Probability and Statistical Theory, which includes: the construction and application of probabilistic models for economics and social sciences; the study of typical themes in statistic methodology, with particular emphasis on Bayesian methodology and, more in general, all problems in which the application of statistical techniques are beneficial.
  • Quantitative and Experimental Methods for Social Sciences, which includes the study and development of quantitative methods that can be applied to economics and social sciences, like static and dynamic optimization, functional analysis, and dynamic systems. Particular attention is given to the experimental sphere.

Quality and international visibility in research in the various areas are considered fundamental elements in the selection process and composition of our Faculty.
