ETTORE BOCCONI DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

Department Chairman: Donato Masciandaro

Description and Mission

The Department of Economics provides a dynamic research environment in which faculty members and distinguished visitors conduct both applied and theoretical research in all areas of economics. The department is actively involved in the international academic job market to hire its junior and senior faculty.

The core mission of the department is to conduct first-rate research in economics and to follow the best practices of the international scientific community.

Its faculty includes Fellows of the Econometric Society, past presidents of the European Economic Association, editors and members of the editorial boards of leading journals in Economics, recipients of competitive grands (e.g., by the European Research Council and the National Science Foundation), and winners of prestigious awards and fellowships, such as the Y. Jahnsson award by the European Economic Association or the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship.

Some members of the department act as consultants for international organizations, such as the IMF, the World Bank, the European Commission and the European Central Bank, and are regular columnists in national and foreign newspapers.

Members of the department are actively engaged with the scientific activities of some of Bocconi's research centers, such as Baffi, IGIER and IEFE.

History

The Institute of Economics and Social Sciences was founded in 1920. It was Università Bocconi's first Institute and, starting in 1921, Luigi Einaudi acted as the Institute's Director. It became the Institute of Statistics in 1933 when the Ettore Bocconi Institute of Economics was inaugurated. This was created because of an endowment from Donna Javotte Manca di Villahermosa in honor of her husband, son of the University's founder and President of the University Board from 1914 to 1932. This Institute is operatively autonomous and boasts a high quality economics program. In 1935 the Institute of Economic Policy was created, which merged with the Ettore Bocconi Institute of Economics in the early Seventies.

The Ettore Bocconi Institute was directed by Gustavo Del Vecchio, Giovanni Demaria, Innocenzo Gasparini, Mario Monti, Franco Bruni and Roberto Artoni. Between 1972 and 2007 it worked in the University along with the Department of Economics, with the task of coordinating research at the various Institutes.

During the reorganization process of the Università Bocconi academic structures, the Ettore Bocconi Department of Economics was created in 2007, with Michele Polo acting as its first Head of Department.
